Blepharoplasty: What is It?

The eyes have a great impact on a person’s overall look more than his other facial features. Unluckily, the eyes are usually the first place to show signs of aging. This is so since the skin around the eyes is very thin compared to other areas of the face. This area also has weaker internal support and is exposed to more activity even than the mouth. These factors, along with genetic factors, exposure to sunlight, fatigue and stress, explains why the eyelids are usually the first parts of the face to display aging symptoms and why a lot of people – young and old – can take advantage of eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. This technique can actually create a huge difference in your appearance because it can get rid of pouches, bags and extra skin from over and under your eyes.

In an upper eyelid surgery, the plastic surgeon makes incisions in the person’s natural creases and skin lines. He will then separate the skin from the underlying fatty tissue and muscle. After separation, the extra skin that causes the wrinkles and the fat that pulls the skin is eliminated and/or sculpted by your cosmetic surgeon. Lastly, the incisions are then closed.

In a lower eyelid surgery, the incision is frequently done inside the eyelid’s rim. Then, the fat pads creating the bags in your eyes are then repositioned or removed. Crow’s feet and wrinkles surrounding the eyes are also resurfaced with the help of laser using the same technique to create an even younger-looking you. When the muscles of your lower lids have to be tightened, a very tiny incision is created under the lower eyelashes. The incision is then closed with the help of very fine stitches and sometimes it is sealed using a special kind of surgical glue.
